Coral Reef Aquaculture

A subsidiary of Coral Reef Aquariums

Welcome...

Welcome to Coral Reef Aquaculture. Our goal is to help lessen the damage being done to our Oceans Reefs by excess Coral Harvesting. Its a known fact in the Saltwater Aquarium Hobby that we are over harvesting shallow reefs throughout the world as well as many reef areas are being damaged by the harvesting process. Once a colonly of coral is harvested from a reef it's gone! Many times the divers will break the colony into smaller pieces for better order fullfilment. During that process damage could be done to surrounding corals and usually some loss of fragments of the coral being harvested.

Aquaculture has grown over the last couple of years throughout our industry in an effort to move aways from coral harvesting. Many of the same collection stations in qestion have begun to set up aguaculture facilities but few are truly propagating corals from mother colonies. Most are simply chopping up full coral colonies into "Frags". While many times this gives the hobbyist a more affordable coral it remains a harvested coral.

Those that are propagating corals, as we do at Coral Reef Aquaculture, use the mother colony to provide clippings for propagation either on a Coral Plug or small rock fragment. Once there mounted, or attached to a base they are moved to an acclimation tank for a couple weeks. Once their inspected for any damage we move them to our grow out tanks.  The mother colony is left in the colony tank and checked daily for any signs of stress from the clipping. In most cases both the colony and clippings are dipped in a "natural Rx to prevent any infection breakouts.

From our grow out tanks the corals are moved to our Retail Coral Tanks at Coral Reef Aquariums for sale to the public. Depending on the coral this could be anywhere from 30 days to 90 days.

Where Our Corals Are Available

Our Aquaculture facilities is not open to the public. Our propagation and acclimation tanks are located in a private room within Coral Reef Aquariums. Our grow out tanks are located a mile off-site.
